What are dental implants?
Dental implants replace both the visible crown and the root of a missing tooth. Because the implant is anchored in bone, it does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support the way a conventional bridge does, and it helps maintain the jawbone that normally shrinks after a tooth is lost. At OGHA Dental, implant treatment begins with a careful assessment of your bone, gums, bite and general health so that the plan is predictable and suited to you.
Who may need it?
- Adults with one or more missing teeth
- People with loose or uncomfortable dentures
- Patients who prefer not to cut down healthy neighbouring teeth for a bridge
- Those with adequate bone, or who are suitable for bone grafting
How the treatment works at OGHA Dental
- Consultation & imagingClinical examination and X-rays or 3D scans to assess bone volume and anatomy.
- Treatment planningImplant position, size and final tooth design are planned in advance.
- Implant placementThe implant is placed under local anaesthesia; most patients describe pressure rather than pain.
- Healing (osseointegration)The bone bonds to the implant, typically over about 3–6 months.
- Final restorationA custom crown, bridge or implant-supported denture is fitted and your bite is refined.
How long it takes
From placement to final crown, treatment commonly takes 3–6 months. Cases needing bone grafting can take longer. Some cases may be suitable for earlier loading; this is decided case by case.
Recovery & aftercare
Mild swelling or tenderness for a few days is common and is usually managed with simple pain relief. Most people return to work the next day. Soft foods are advised initially.
Risks and limitations
As with any surgical procedure, risks include infection, swelling, bleeding and, rarely, implant failure or nerve irritation. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes increase risk. Implants need daily cleaning and regular professional maintenance to prevent gum inflammation around them (peri-implantitis).
What affects the cost?
Every treatment plan is individual. After your examination we provide a clear written estimate. Factors that influence cost include:
- Number of implants and teeth being replaced
- Need for bone grafting or sinus lift
- Implant system and crown material
- Type of final restoration (single crown, bridge, overdenture)

Frequently asked questions
Are dental implants painful?
Implant placement is done under local anaesthesia, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. Afterwards, mild soreness and swelling for a few days is common and is usually controlled with simple pain relief.
How long do dental implants last?
With good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and no smoking, implants can last for many years and often decades. The crown on top may need replacing over time due to normal wear.
Who is not suitable for dental implants?
Implants may be delayed or unsuitable for people with uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, active gum disease, insufficient bone without grafting, or certain medical conditions and medications. A consultation is needed to assess suitability.
Implant or bridge — which is better?
An implant does not require cutting down neighbouring teeth and helps preserve bone, while a bridge can be quicker and avoids surgery. The better option depends on your bone, gums, adjacent teeth and preferences.
