What is general & preventive dentistry?
Preventive and general dentistry is the everyday care that keeps teeth and gums healthy for life. It includes a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, professional cleaning to remove plaque and hardened tartar, and simple restorations such as fillings when a cavity is found. Our philosophy, shaped by Dr. Sandhya Goli's 25+ years of practice in Boston, is to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible and to recommend only the treatment you genuinely need.
Who may need it?
- Adults and children due for a routine check-up (usually every six months, or as advised)
- Anyone with tartar build-up, stains, bleeding gums or bad breath
- People with sensitivity or a suspected cavity
- Patients who want a second opinion before agreeing to extensive treatment
How the treatment works at OGHA Dental
- Medical & dental historyWe review your health, medications and dental concerns.
- ExaminationTeeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and soft tissues are checked; X-rays are taken only when clinically needed.
- Professional cleaningScaling and polishing remove plaque and tartar that brushing cannot.
- Personalised planWe explain findings in plain language and prioritise what matters most.
How long it takes
A check-up with cleaning usually takes 45–60 minutes. Simple fillings are usually completed in one visit.
Recovery & aftercare
There is no downtime. Mild sensitivity after a deep cleaning or new filling usually settles within a few days.
Risks and limitations
Cleaning and fillings are routine, low-risk procedures. Temporary sensitivity is the most common after-effect.
What affects the cost?
Every treatment plan is individual. After your examination we provide a clear written estimate. Factors that influence cost include:
- Whether scaling alone or deeper gum cleaning is needed
- Number and size of fillings
- Filling material (composite, glass ionomer)
- Need for X-rays

Frequently asked questions
How often should I visit the dentist?
Most people benefit from a check-up and cleaning every six months. People with gum disease, a high cavity rate or orthodontic appliances may need visits every three to four months. Your dentist will recommend an interval based on your risk.
Does scaling damage tooth enamel?
No. Professional scaling removes hardened tartar from the tooth surface and does not remove enamel. Some people notice temporary sensitivity because tartar had been covering exposed areas, and this usually settles within days.
Are tooth-coloured fillings safe and durable?
Modern composite (tooth-coloured) fillings bond to the tooth, need less drilling than older materials and can last many years with good oral hygiene. Longevity depends on size, location and bite forces.
